Firewall ScanIt's important to know if your software firewall or hardware firewall is truly protecting you by blocking all unwanted internet traffic. You cannot tell just by looking at your log files if your network or computer is locked up tight. The only true way to see what intruders might see from the outside looking in is to perform a firewall scan. Several legitimate websites offer a free firewall scan, also known as a port scan. This will cause a probe targeted at your IP address to check for several things. A successful port scan will reveal little to nothing about your computer, as this means nothing could get in. If you have some security vulnerabilities in your firewall, you will immediately know. The best defense in internet security is a good offense. Beat the hackers at their game and lock up your network tight with the information you get out of a port scan. Many unscrupulous websites offer a free firewall scan, but are actually offering spyware and malicious software. Be careful where you go to get an online firewall port scan, as this is an invasive procedure (particularly if your firewall isn't configured properly). Stick with reputable internet security companies and firewall vendors. Below is a list of recommended, legitimate websites that will provide you with a free online scan of your firewall and/or computer. A firewall scan identifies your IP address, which is public knowledge and completely save. Normally this is the outside address of your broadband router or modem. This information is needed in order to determine where to send the port scan probes to. Special port scanning software is used to quickly scan for opened ports on your firewall, looking for a way in. If a port is open or the traffic not adequately blocked by your firewall, information about your computer will be retrieved. If you see any of this information, recheck your firewall configuration and tighten security. It is a good recommended practice to set your firewall to "stealth" mode if possible. This should literally make your network invisible to hackers. Free Online Firewall Scan
