How an Anti Virus Product Works

An anti virus program watches for viruses, catches them before they execute, and kills them.  It works by comparing certain data activity and known virus file patterns against it's database of known virus definitions.  When it finds a virus, it kills or disables it based on instruction supplied in it's database.  Because anti virus software is only as good as it's last database update, antivirus definitions must be downloaded and installed on a regular basis (preferably daily).

Choosing an Anti Virus Program

There are many good antivirus applications on the market today, and many of them are free.  All basically work the same way, but some are more accurate at detecting and removing viruses (assuming the virus definitions are kept updated).  Some anti virus products are easier to install, configure and update than others.  Some have a lot of advanced configuration options, and some have a pretty simple interface.
